Case Study -- e-commerce web site development with custom design

Project: AmysBabies.com
Year: 2006
Type: retail e-commerce

Challenge:
Work with a high class NYC design firm to implement their vision for their client's e-commerce web site. Do it on a small budget.

Solution:
Gorges Web Sites worked on this one with two of their NYC partners. 1over0 Technologies has partnered with Gorges Web Sites on other projects. (see Revolution Health case study, TChing Store case study). The Happy Corp is a design firm that frequently turns to 1over0 and Gorges Web Sites for specialized web site engineering and development work.

AmysBabies.com is a sharp and informative web site for parents

For a budget under $10K, Gorges Web Sites completed and launched AmysBabies.com. Our part of this project involved the following steps:

  • Render the delivered design into its web components: CSS and HTML
  • Upgrade and customize the functionality of the open-source shopping cart system zen-cart to specification
  • Create zen-cart templates for each page in the site to exactly match the delivered custom design
  • Train site administrators on the use of the admin tools for maintaining their products
  • Integrate with merchant account, apply SSL encryption, test credit card payments
  • Add in Purchase Order (PO) module for payments from institutions
  • Add in Gorges Web Sites proprietary image ‘right sizing’ mechanisms for improved image handling and display of product photos
  • Add in FLASH on home page and all delivered content
  • Migrate existing store and customer data from older version of zen-cart
  • Optimize the final web site with server side caching mechanisms and SQL optimizations

The high quality web site, and its low budget, gives credence to our philosophy of partnering with other talented agencies to create web sites of very high value and design, but on remarkably small budgets.

Clear presentations of products and easy shopping experience for customers

We attribute our success in delivering extremely high quality web sites for low costs to several benefits derived from our custom software development processes:

  • Use of open source products such as zen-cart when possible
  • Gorges existing code-base of tools and mechanisms that are available and can plug-in to any new web site (e.g. authentication, photo galleries, news, events, shopping cart, etc).
  • The 'team' effect we gain by utilizing a team of seasoned engineers on each and every project.
  • Gorges employees and our partners contribute knowledge and experience to the project to ensure its timely and accurate completion

AmysBabies.com shows that high caliber design and effective e-commerce retail systems don't have to cost a fortune. Won't you Go Gorges?
